Cusper’s Column No. 1 - Ali Conrad
Hey everyone, we’d like to introduce a new lil thang to showcase some of the talented contributors we’ve been able to publish in On the Cusp. This is going to be a recurring feature where we give you a taste of the work they do and they get to answer our burning questions about life and things.
Ali has been a huge supporter since the founding of OTC and consistently surprises us with her writing. Based in New York, she is a twenty-something cat enthusiast and loves marshmallows and her husband. She is also the current reigning Bio Champion with “Ali Conrad wears her heart on her ma’fuckin sleeve.”

What inspires you?
More importantly, what doesn’t?
Tell us about your process for a typical piece of writing.
I usually zone out to some music and think about the melody or the bass lines or the guitar riff. Then I smoke a cigarette or two and pretend I have an apartment inside my own chest cavity. Then I write about all the mucky, gritty things I find in there.
What do you enjoy doing aside from crafting things with words?
Ironically enough, I am an interior design major. I love spaces and transforming them into beautiful calypsos. There is something magnifying about decorating a plain white space and making it your own. It’s like signing your name on the bottom of a doorframe.
I also really enjoy reading. I have an extensive collection of novels that I sometimes read fix or six times. Then there’s biking, swimming in lakes, falling asleep on my husband under a blanket of stars, dreaming.
What do you get at a cafe?
Herbal tea and an avocado sandwich - I’m boring.
And most importantly, What’s the best snack or pizza option?
Ice cold lemonade with a slice of mushroom and spinach pizza. UGH, is this heaven?
